Chibuku
A local "beer". We put
this in inverted commas as it
is beer in the loosest sense of
the word. The best way to describe
it is something between alcoholic
milkshake or porridge -
but the locals seem to like it,
and it's definitely worth
a try (even if you won't
be taking any back with you!)
Fresh or Dried 'Chambo'
A staple food for people living
on the lake. You'll be amazed
at the taste and what the Malawians
can do with this fish. If you
get up early enough, you can sometimes
see fishermen land their catch
on a nearby beach. Or, for those
who want a lie in, visit the dried
chambo stalls in Chintheche market,
but bring your clothes peg!
Malawian
Paintings and Carvings
Lovingly created by master Malawian
artisans, these pieces of art
are an impressive gift or souvenir
to remind you of your stay in
the "warm heart of Africa".
Visits from these nomadic tradesmen
are easily organised - and
remember, there is always some
flexibility over the price!
